Fix Car Scratches – 5 Reasons Your Auto Scratch Remover Stinks
You just got a scratch on your car and wondering how to fix car scratches and you are sick to your stomach. You might be wondering
how much will it cost to repair if you have to take it to a pro. Or you might wonder if you can remove it your self! Ah ha! You remember a big guy with a beard and blue shirt that shouted a lot selling something on TV! You race to your computer…
#1 Magic Fix It Pen! Fix Car Scratches Easily. Watch Them “Disappear” Right Before Your Eyes And Magically Repair Auto Scrapes!
You know when I was a kid, I believed if I got a Superman outfit, cape and all…that I could fly. I did get the outfit…and it didn’t work. Man was I bummed out… I started to wonder what other things I saw on TV were not true either…
The Fix It Pen is simply a clear acrylic polymer (similar to floor shine acrylic liquid). It makes the white of the clear coat scratch turn clear. The scratch is still there and so is a bump of clear acrylic polymer. The bump of clear acrylic is visible on top of the paint. It does not really fix car scratches.
I guess if you are OK with lots of little clear bumps of acrylic resin all over your car, then this is for you.
Here is the part that is deceiving. If you have a scratch that has penetrated to the color coat, and want to remove the scratch, this pen will do nothing for restoring the color. For instance, the TV infomercial shows a nail being scraped across the hood of the car…I can guarantee that would require car touch up paint to fix car scratches correctly.
The Fix IT magic pen product was invented for the “As Seen On TV” infomercial car scratch removal product. It was originally marketed at a TV price point, of $19.95 with 800 number to call in. The phone sales people used high pressure phone up sells and a forced membership raising the price to $75.00. It was meant to be sold to millions of people…and it was.
They got the best Pitch Man in the world, the late great Billy Mays…and as they say… the rest is history. These days you can buy just the pen just about everywhere even the grocery store. Hey honey, “pick up some eggs, milk and one of the those Fix It pens so we can fix our car scratches this weekend!”
Don’t take my word for it just Google “Fix It scam” and decide for yourself.
Professionals do not use Fix IT pens to repair their automobiles and neither should you.
Zero product support.
#2 It’s A Fix Car Scratches Hand-Me-Down!
You found a Fix Car Scratches Hand-Me-Down under the work bench (or worse yet your neighbors)…yep, rusted old tin can with the writing flaking off. It has a old red shop rag stuffed in it and its covered with mildew and you are thinking this will do the trick to restore automobile scrapes!
Not only is this lame, it can be down right damaging to try on your modern clear coat paint finish. Tell me… you weren’t REALLY thinking about using the mysterious muck AND that old stinky rag ON YOUR NEW CAR… were you?!
All seriousness aside old fashion products like this that “remove” vehicle scrapes, are typically a “rubbing compound” and EXTREMELY abrasive. They can leave a dull haze on modern automotive clear coat finishes.
The tin can might say “rubbing compound” or “polishing compound” or something similar.
It might even be a liquid. I am amazed companies still sell this type of car scratch removal product to consumers in stores.
It’s bad ju ju and not the best way to repair your auto.
If you have a can… toss it out …or if you have a tin of “Whiz” sell it on Ebay as a collector item.
Stay FAR FAR away from “rubbing compounds” …nuff said.
#3 Fix Car Scratches Temporarily (Gone Today - Here Tomorrow)
Weird huh? Why would ANYONE want a temporary vehicle scratch removal product? They wouldn’t! Understand the product is not labeled “temporary” why in the world would someone pay good money for that…EXACTLY! You get to find this out on your own after a few hard rain showers or automatic carwashes (shame on you).
This is how the $5.00-$10.00 bottle of “magic” works. Its full of silicone fillers and a very light duty polish. You rub it in and it fills the scratches with cheap silicone fillers making it all shiny and VIOLA…just like new…for a week or so The vast majority of “fix car scratches” products on store shelves are just this type of product.
These worthless car scratch removal products are cheap to manufacture, can be sold cheap for $5-$10 and if you are displeased with the results…well…there are about a 100 people right behind you that will buy it too. The mass marketers have been getting away with these fake car scratch removal products for years and will continue to do so.
Here is a little tip: Used car dealers use this type on cars before they go on the lot rather than correctly trying to fix the scratch. This is because they can pay a kid $20 a car verses a Professional detailer $300. The car will stay looking nice long enough for the dealer to get their money and you are off the lot.
All products that claim to repair auto scratches in a single bottle with a price tag of around $5- $10 are pretty much guaranteed to have fillers.
Don’t waste your time or money on them they WILL NOT fix car scratches permanently.
#4 Quixx Is Europe’s Fix Car Scratches Solution
(it actually can get rid of scratches when compared to Fix It …which is a joke)
You know the old saying “Good Things come in small boxes”. Quixx brand auto scratch remover is the European answer to mass marketing an auto scratch remover for $19.95 to compete with Fix it at the same price point. However Quixx is not the hoax Fix It is. Quixx can fix minor scratches and can give inconsistent results when tackling tougher scratches.
Quixx cut corners to hit the $19.95 price. You get a total of 50 grams (1.8 ounces) of formula. Two paper towels to apply the formula, 4 strips of sand paper 1”x4” . The directions say the sand paper strips are meant to wet sand a very deep scratch.
The tiny strips of paper are incorrect for ANY type car repair technique. The way in which they show using them in video on the internet is totally incorrect by professional best practice.
If you use the strips of wet sand paper supplied in the kit the way Quixx does on internet videos you can cause more damage to your paint than you started with.
The tiny amount (1.8 ounces) of formula supplied with the kit is hardly enough to fix car scratches in a few small areas. If you have large areas of scratches or multiple scratches around your car you probably will need buy at least 2 or more kits.
Quixx dosen’t provide a professional 6-12 month acrylic polymer sealant to seal the entire repaired area. This is THE correct way to fix car scratches properly thereby protecting the restored paint finish after your done.
The paper towels supplied with the kit are cheap throw-a-ways and not as safe to fix a car scratch when compared to a high quality automotive micro fiber towel. High quality micro fiber towels can be washed and reused to fix vehicle scratches 100′s of times . The tiny strips of wet sand paper can cause more harm than good and are not the proper way to hand wet sanding when you are trying to fix car scratches.
The videos on the internet showing how to use the product a pretty lame.
The directions are minimal and printed on one side of a 4″x6″ piece of paper. No best practice FAQs on the website.
This is a one time throw-away car scratch removal product that can work on minor scratches and can give inconsistent results when tackling tougher and large scratch areas. Hey what do you expect for $19.95 ?
Quixx is located in Germany, so there is no direct customer support, unless perhaps, you speak German. The distribution company is in the USA and does not offer personalized product support. There is no money back guarantee stated anywhere on the packaging.
#5 Fix Car Scratches I’ll Just “Wing It” (smorgaborg auto scratch remover)
You go to Pep Boys (insert any other chain auto parts store) and ask the guy or girl behind the counter what would they recommend to fix a scratch on your brand new car. The reply, “well there is a lot of stuff over on the shelf, they all are pretty good, you probably cant go wrong with any of them”. You walk over and spend 30 minutes reading the labels and pick a couple of bottles that sound like they might work…heck try em all out…one has to work!
You get it all home and realize the instructions say you need micro fiber towels to correctly repair your auto’s scrapes. You need to wash the car prior to removing scratches. Whoops…I didn’t buy wax and I don’t have any car shampoo! Why do I need them?
The sun is going down…you want to get rid of that scratch on your car quick so you grab an old tee shirt, dust off the scratch areas and then use a old cotton rag in the garage for applying polish and start to have at the scratches…. 2 hours later, the whole area looks worse?!
It has a weird “haze” and the paint looks cloudy…what did that come from? Did I wreck the paint?! Crap…what do I do now…who do I call for help with these products?
